We Can Be Patriots Who Defend Democracy

July 4, 2026, marks the 250th anniversary of our Declaration of Independence!

On that same day millions of Americans throughout our country will gather to celebrate No Kings Day. These rallies will be the third No Kings Day organized by three primary groups: Indivisible, MoveOn.org, and 50501. These three groups are part of a larger coalition of more than 200 groups who are rallying Americans to fight back to preserve our democracy. The goal of each No Kings Day has been to defend against the daily threats to our democracy.

On July 4 we have the potential to reach a critical mass. Erica Chenoweth, an American political scientist and the author of Civil Resistance: What Everyone Needs to Know, found that non-violent anti-authoritarian movements that got active participation by at least 3.5 percent of the population succeeded. In the United States, 3.5 percent of our population is about 12 million people.

I propose an idea that can help us reach that critical mass on July 4, 2026. My proposal is based on the concept of “Each One, Teach One.”

The “Each One, Teach One” concept has many iterations including enslaved people teaching each other to read, political prisoners teaching each other to read on Robben Island in South Africa during apartheid, and many other groups in different parts of the world.

My proposal is to promote the idea of “Each One, BRING One” to the No Kings Day act of non-violent resistance on July 4, 2026. More than 7 million Americans participated in the No Kings Day rallies on October 18, 2025.

If everyone who participated in No Kings Day on October 18, 2025, were to bring one new participant to the July 4 event, we would reach 14 million, well over 3.5 percent of our population.

If you attended the October 18 event, plan to attend the event on July 4, 2026 (which is on Saturday), and bring one new person with you. You will be a patriot who defends our democracy as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our declaration of independence from tyranny.

Take this action not only for yourself! Take this action for your children, your grandchildren, your nieces and nephews, your friends, and colleagues who will also enjoy the benefits of democracy.

By taking this action, you can embrace the hope that Jane Goodall described in her last book. Goodall wrote this book to “help people realize that their actions, however small they may seem, will truly make a difference. The cumulative effect of thousands of ethical actions can help save our world for future generations.”

The cumulative effect of millions of Americans joining the No Kings Day rallies on July 4, 2026, can help save our country and our world for future generations.

“Each One, BRING One!” Be a patriot who defends democracy!
