We Can Believe It’s Never Too Late to Change the Future

“We have to create American democracy in new ways to take on the new problems facing our future!” Those are the words of Heather Cox Richardson at a Red, Wine, and Blue Zoom meeting last month on January 20.

If we want to change the future, we need to remember that democracy is NOT a spectator sport!

If we want to change the future, we need to remember the words of Desmond Tutu: “Neutrality is complicity!”

If we want to change the future, we can attend events like the upcoming No Kings Day on Saturday, March 28. The goal is for this event to be the largest protest in American history.

If we want to change the future, we also need to remember the perspective of Indivisible, the group co-founded by Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg.

In their new podcast called What’s the Plan? they explain:

Our goal is to “stop the fascist regime from consolidating its grip on power.”

Our strategy is to “organize overwhelming, nonviolent people power to foster a culture of mass defiance.”

Our tactics include No Kings Days that are designed to do three things:

  • 1. Model defiance on a national scale.
    2. Create social proof that opposition is real.
    3. Recruit folks who were not previously active.

By showing up and mobilizing we can demonstrate what it looks like “when contagious courage becomes endemic.” The people of Minneapolis demonstrated how contagious courage can become endemic.

Bruce Springsteen even wrote a song as a tribute to the courage of the people of Minneapolis, “Streets of Minneapolis.”
